What is the Difference Between JNA and JNEC?

What is the Difference Between JNA and JNEC?

JNEC, or the Japan Nailist Examination Center, focuses primarily on technical certification. Since 1997, it has offered skill examinations from Level 3 to Level 1 to assess a nailist’s technical abilities. On the other hand, JNA, the Japan Nailist Association, evaluates both technical skills and the artistic and design aspects of nail art. Since its establishment in 1985, JNA has been a leading authority in setting the standards for Japanese nail care. Both are significant certifications in the industry, but they have different areas of focus.

What is JNA?

The “Nailist Skills Certification Exam” hosted by the Japan Nailist Association (JNA) is Japan's oldest and most reputable nail qualification exam, with around 700,000 participants to date. Since 2017, JNA has extended this certification globally by introducing the JNA International Nailist Examination. Those who pass this exam receive an internationally recognized JNA Nailist Certificate.

JNA offers three levels—Grade 3, Grade 2, and Grade 1. Candidates must register at least one month in advance, with all application documents submitted to the Japan headquarters. The test materials, admission tickets, and certificates are issued directly from Japan. If candidates miss the registration deadline, they must wait until the next exam cycle.

What is JNEC?

JNEC (Japan Nailist Examination Center) was established by the Japan Nailist Association and began certification exams in 1997. It offers skill certification from Level 3 to Level 1 (increasing in difficulty). In Japan, nail professionals are generally required to hold a JNEC Level 2 certification or higher. This highly regarded certification is even recognized by the Japanese Prime Minister’s Office.

Exam Locations

  • JNEC Exam Location: Only available in Japan, not accessible domestically.

  • JNA Exam Location: Previously only available in Japan, now candidates can register at authorized centers domestically.

Benefits of Registering for JNA

With JNA, you can earn certification equivalent to taking the exam in Japan without leaving your home country. This includes comprehensive training from renowned Japanese JNA instructors, guidance on professional techniques, and mastering authentic, healthy Japanese nail care methods to elevate your client’s experience.

Upon passing, you will gain an internationally recognized nailist certificate that highlights your professional standing, builds customer trust, and enhances your industry reputation. Compared to uncertified nailists, this certification can help you stand out among other nailists and salons, making you a preferred choice for clients.

Career Pathway

JNA provides a complete career development pathway, from Level 3 to Level 1, allowing you to build and refine your foundational skills. You can then progress to become a certified instructor, connect with industry leaders, participate in international Japanese nail art competitions, and even open your own salon or training academy, helping you realize your dreams in the nail industry.
